Mallarmé had written the free-verse poem “A Throw of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance” in 1897, but it was not published in book form until 1914. The publication was revolutionary in its use of the double-page format and its unusual mix of typefaces. Each page is meant to be read as one panel, and the text flows back and forth along irregular lines. Mallarmé’s novel use of the medium of the book and his insistence on the visuality of text had a profound impact on modernist poetry.
