Andrew Fleming West, Class of 1874, was named the first Dean of the University's graduate school in 1900. He had an argument with Woodrow Wilson, then President of the University, about the location of the graduate school; West's choice triumphed. He saw this sculpture—created by R. Tait McKenzie, a Canadian sculptor of heroic monuments—unveiled in his lifetime.
