The Art of Asia's Diasporas and the Asian-American Experience

Chinese, Qing dynasty, 1644–1912: American Eagle plate, ca. 1790. Porcelain with overglaze enamels, h. 2.4 cm., diam. 24.7 cm. Gift of Clement K. Corbin, Class of 1902 (y1965-281).This resource brings together works from the Museum’s collections by Asian American artists, American artists working in Asia and/or in an Asian style, and Asian artists working in America. Many of the works, such as an eighteenth-century dinner plate made in China for export to the United States, represent a dialogue between Asian and Western art. Drawing from the Museum's collections of Asian art, photography, prints and drawings, and American art, this list is meant to complement works in the Asian art collection.

“The Art of Asia’s Diasporas” is organized into five overlapping themes:

A related 2009 exhibition, Outside In: Chinese x American x Contemporary Art, also explores these themes.

We see these categories as a starting-point for discussion and research and welcome you to share your own ideas for other themes or works to be included.
