Japanese Workshop Art

The collection numbers over six thousand items from the Edo period or later. A preliminary glance at some of the material reveals the names of various artists and artist locations in Japan. This group of material may be from a late Kano School workshop.  The material could have functioned as preparatory drawings and pattern books for finished paintings and textile designs. They may have been used to explore different colors, designs, and compositions for the final work. Some of the materials seem to document or record paintings and decorative patterns.  There are also travelogues that record famous scenic sights. As first hand documentary evidence, the collection has great potential for being a valuable resource for studying artist workshop practice in Japan.
