The Resonant Sculpture Project with Avram Fefer

Thursday, April 30, 2015 @ 6:00 pm

Location

Outside by “Hedgehog and the Fox”, near Fine Hall

Jazz saxophonist Avram Fefer will create an improvisational piece inspired by Richard Serra’s sculpture The Hedgehog and the Fox, and highlight the complex acoustic relationship between the music, the sculpture, and the audience. This live interactive performance will be filmed and recorded for future presentation and will be immediately followed by a reception on the top floor of Fine Hall.

Artist's Statement: After many productive years as a saxophonist, improviser, and bandleader in the worlds of modern jazz, funk, and African music, I recently initiated a project that mixes performance art, music, sculpture, and film in surprisingly potent combinations. The Resonant Sculpture Project began with a performance in Bridgehampton, NY in the summer of 2012, continued in Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park, at upstate New York’s Storm King, and then again this past February at The Gagosian Gallery in New York City with Serra’s piece, Inside Out.

What began as a straightforward approach to solo performance has evolved into a powerful examination of deep listening practices, acoustic interaction, physical awareness of space, audience participation, and audio-video techniques. The result is a more complex and nuanced understanding of the relationship between music and sculpture.
