Japanese
Edo period, 1603–1868

Constrained by both medium and format, the artist has divided the lacquer box into three regions for ornamentation. The exterior is wrapped entirely by crisscrossing blades of grass interspersed with clusters of wisteria. In contrast, in the interior of the box the artist has decided to vary the design by creating a geometric pattern that makes the same grass motif appear more angular.
