Human Condition, 1960

Cast iron
Gift of Stanley J. Seeger Jr., Class of 1952

Made in 1960, Human Condition fuses elements of man and machine, expressing the artist's—and the era's—concern with the symbiotic yet fraught relationship between the social and industrial worlds. The artist did not coat the iron: he intended the work to rust, demonstrating that even this cyborg is vulnerable to the ravages of time.
