Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh

Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh met in Paris, where they both studied art with a teacher named Fernand Cormon. Van Gogh only lived in Paris for a few years. He did not like the city and decided to move to Arles, a small town in southern France. This work was painted in another small town, Tarascon.

What do you see in this painting? How is the work different from a picture painted in a big city? What words would you use to describe the way the paint was put on the canvas? Are the strokes small and fine or big and thick? What color are the thickest strokes?
