Albano, Italy,
early 1880s – reworked 1890s
George Inness, 1825–1894; born Newburgh, NY; died Bridge of Allan, Scotland
y1956-121
Inness resided twice in Rome, in 1851-52 and 1870-74, and continued to paint Italian subjects for nearly three decades. Based on its palette and original plywood support—of a type patented in 1880—Albano, Italy was begun during the early 1880s. Much of its brushwork, however, is characteristic of the artist’s production of a decade later, suggesting Inness returned to the composition and modified it according to his constantly evolving stylistic predilections.
