Untitled [Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, with trucks and loading cranes in distance, seen through bridge slats]
George Segal, American, 1924–2000
Although best known as a sculptor, Segal put his skills as a photographer to use depicting the visual culture of New Jersey's robust system of highways and byways. In a series of photographs shot along Highway 1 in 1966, Segal frames myriad scenes of commerce, industry, and transportation twice over: first with his camera and again with a motif, most often a bridge or fence, inside the picture.
