The works currently on view in the gallery of African art, drawn from the Art Museum’s collection and from private collections, represent the fundamental link between art and ritual life in many African societies.
Earlier this year, the museum made an important step in strengthening its collection of avant-garde art from the early twentieth century when it acquired Jean Arp’s assemblage Shirtfront and Necktie from 1927–28.
