Members Event | In Pursuit of Ganymede

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 @ 5:30 pm

Sir Peter Paul Rubens—humanist, diplomat, art collector, and the head of a thriving, productive workshop—was one of the most influential artists of the seventeenth century. He received important commissions from several European monarchs, including Marie de Medici of France and Charles I of England, but none more so than King Philip IV of Spain. Join Ronni Baer, Allen R. Adler, Class of 1967, Distinguished Curator and Lecturer, and Chief Conservator Bart Devolder as they discuss two works of art by Rubens in the collection of the Princeton University Art Museum: a newly acquired oil sketch of The Abduction of Ganymede, made for Philip’s hunting lodge outside Madrid, and The Death of Adonis (long in Princeton’s collections), made at about the same time for Philip’s summer apartments in his city palace. The speakers will explore the artist’s approach to these commissions, including his interpretation of the subject matter, and expound on his technical prowess and idiosyncratic working methods.
