Opening and Curator Talk: The Head that Wears the Crown: Black Women's Headwear from Slavery to Freedom

Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum
Friday, September 20, 2024 @ 6:00 pm

On September 20 and 21, the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) will open a new special exhibition: The Head that Wears the Crown: Black Women's Headwear from Slavery to Freedom.

For centuries, Black women have expressed their creativity and resistance through the crowns of their heads. From head wraps to “church hats,” headwear symbolized freedom, commitment to spiritual life, and a love for fashion that enslaved and free women shared. The Head that Wears the Crown explores the past, present, and future of African American women’s headwear. This special exhibition will feature selections from SSAAM's museum collection and photo portraits of community members across the generations modeling early- to late-twentieth-century church hats.

Please RSVP here and reserve your spot now! Tickets are pay-what-you-can.
