This resource brings together works from the Museum’s collection by artists of African descent who were born or currently reside outside of Africa; non-African artists’ imaginings of Africa and its diasporas; and the influence of African visual culture on Western art. Drawing from our collections of modern and contemporary art, photography, prints and drawings, European painting, and American art, this list is meant to complement works in the African collection. “The Art of Africa and its Diasporas” is organized into four overlapping themes:
- Representation of Africans and People of African Descent
- Artists of Africa’s Diasporas
- Images of Slavery and Abolition
- Satire and Stereotypes
We see these categories as a starting point for discussion and research, and we welcome you to share your own ideas for other themes or works to be included.
