Panel Discussion: Pan-African Collecting at HBCUs and Beyond
Join Assistant Curator Perrin Lathrop and Director Jamaal B. Sheats of Fisk University Galleries, co-curators of African Modernism in America, alongside Princeton Professor Chika Okeke-Agulu for a panel discussion to celebrate the exhibition’s presentation at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.
African Modernism in America is the first major exhibition to examine the complex connections between modern African artists and American patrons, artists, and cultural organizations amid the interlocking histories of civil rights, decolonization, and the Cold War. This conversation will explore one of the major themes of the show: the history of collecting art by African and African Diasporic artists in the United States, focusing on the leadership of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other Black institutions.
