Color and Motion

The current installation on view in Marquand Mather gathers together a group of artists who shared an interest in the power of the elemental properties of art--color, geometry, and materiality -- to evoke a sensory response from viewers. Led by figures such as Calder, Albers and Vasarely, these artists understood that such elements were not fixed, but rather in various combinations would produce optical effects, appearing to shift in hue or create a sense of dynamic motion depending on the quality of light or movement of the viewer in front of the work.
