Genre Painting
Genre scenes depict people engaged in ordinary activities. Scenes of amorous dalliance tend to mock licentious behavior. Domestic interiors show the well-ordered female domain, where virtuous women care for their children and households. As the century progressed, new subjects, which were less overtly moralizing or didactic, became the focus of the artist’s brush.
