Students as Collectors
Since its inception in the fall of 2008, the class “ART 425: The Japanese Print,” taught by Professor Andrew Watsky in the Department of Art and Archaeology, has been held four times. The class is unique in that one of the major projects the students undertake is the selection of one or more prints for the Art Museum to acquire. By studying the history of woodblock prints in the Edo period (1600–1868), when prints developed greatly in both technical sophistication and artistic finesse, the students gained the knowledge necessary to make an informed acquisition for the Museum. On display here are prints that the four classes selected. Together they enrich and deepen the Museum’s collection of Japanese art.
