John Witherspoon, Princeton University's sixth president, is memorialized in this twenty-first-century bronze, which has a twin in Witherspoon's native Scotland. Sculptor Alexander Stoddart, also a Scotsman, included everyday objects to symbolize his subject’s character: a Bible, lectern, and eagle represent, respectively, Witherspoon's contributions as renowned preacher, beloved teacher and president, and champion of American independence.
