Selections from the Japanese Collection
Selections from the Japanese Collection is currently on display in the Japan galleries and includes two recent gifts from Kurt Gitter and Alice Yelen. Plum Blossoms was painted in the mid-18th century by the artist Ike no Taiga, a well-known Edo period (1600-1868) painter, and features a boldly painted plum branch that arcs across the composition. The second Gitter-Yelen gift is a painting by the early 20th artist Kamisaka Sekka. Sekka’s painting, Noh Scene: Soshiriai (Komachi and the Forged Entry) portrays a character from a traditional Noh play. The figure sits in isolation allowing our attention to focus on her delicate face and sumptuous robes.
