The Four Continents are allegorical sculptures that once belonged to the American statesman Elias Boudinot IV (1740–1821). The female personifications bear attributes characterizing each continent and its peoples. Europe features a domed temple, papal crown, books, arms and armor, grains and flowers, and a horse. These symbolized her religious, cultural, and military dominance as well as her abundant resources, all of which, it was reasoned, reflected God’s favor.
