Collection Publications: Reflections of the Passion (y1956-3)

Saint Francis of Assisi led a life of poverty and devotion to Christ, whom he sought to imitate. His identification with Christ's suffering was so strong that one day, while meditating upon the Crucifixion, he received the stigmata, or marks of the wounds Christ received on the cross. Here Francis displays his stigmata. Standing between two parapets that resemble a tomb, he is likened to the dead Christ, who is often shown displaying his wounds in this manner.
