In 1938 the painting was seized from the collection of Louis de Rothschild in Vienna for the art museum Adolf Hitler planned to build in Linz, Austria. After the war ended, Allied forces attempted to restitute stolen works of art and River Landscape in Moonlight was returned to Baron Rothschild.
