The Rehearsal,

1968

John Koch, American, 1909–1978
y1977-88
During a period when advanced painting largely eschewed representation in favor of an aesthetic of abstraction, Koch steadfastly produced accomplished realistic paintings imbued with a quiet drama. His subjects were drawn from the sophisticated social, artistic, and intellectual circles in which the artist circulated, and his paintings characteristically focus on interpersonal relationships or artistic creation. The Rehearsal engages both themes with the compellingly evocative quality of the artist’s best work.;
