About the Museum

The Princeton University Art Museum seeks to bring the visual arts to the heart of the Princeton University experience for students, scholars, and visitors of all kinds as one of the world’s greatest comprehensive museums in an academic setting. By fostering critical thinking, visual literacy, dialogue, and empathy, the Museum aspires to enrich human experience and to strengthen citizenship.

Mission Statement

As an academically-based, public-facing institution, the Princeton University Art Museum educates, challenges, and inspires the students of Princeton University and members of diverse local, national, and international publics through exposure to the world of art.

Broad in scope yet intimate in experience, the Museum presents opportunities to delve deeply into the study of art and culture, offers a revitalizing experience of extraordinary works of art from around the globe, and provides entry to the University’s intellectual resources. Bringing together outstanding works of art, fresh scholarship, and wide-ranging perspectives, the Museum promotes dialogue among diverse audiences, fosters inquiry and curiosity, and affords encounters that excite the imagination. The Museum acts as a hub and gathering space in which people come together in a welcoming atmosphere, and in which intellectual stimulation goes hand-in-hand with emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
