Image Use and Access  

All information necessary for the proper citation of works in the collections is available in the Online Collections Catalogue object records. We encourage users to attribute works from our collection according to accepted standards, including copyright statements where appropriate. 

Please include the following image credit so that others may find and use our resources:

Image Use – Public Domain 

No approval required. High-resolution images of works in the Public Domain can be freely downloaded from our Online Collections Catalogue for use without seeking approvals. The object caption can also be copied from the download interface. Use the download icon (Downward facing arrow) located on the object page.

Image Use – Copyrighted / Restricted Works 

Permission required. High-resolution images of works under copyright cannot be downloaded from our Online Collections Catalogue. If you wish to use images of restricted works from our collections for any purpose, you must initiate an image request (see below) and seek permission from the copyright holder.

For press images: please email the Museum Press Room

For all members of the Princeton University campus community: please email Museum Rights and Permissions regarding image requests. 

For all other users: please work with our image licensing agent, Art Resource. When submitting a request for a high-resolution image(s), please include any pending deadlines, along with project details. 

  • For Public Domain Works: If the high-resolution image downloaded from our Online Collections Catalogue is not suitable for your needs, please contact Art Resource. 

  • For works under copyright / restricted: Please contact Art Resource for an image file while seeking necessary permissions from the copyright holder.
