The South African artist Jabulile Nala shares her ceramics traditions and techniques.
In this hands-on workshop led by Nala, whose work is on view in the exhibition Clay Has Memory: Creative Lineages from Africa, participants will learn about ceramic traditions the artist learned from her mother and grandmother.
Nala will demonstrate her coil-building process rooted in Indigenous Zulu knowledge and will guide participants in creating their own ceramic tiles using incised surface patterning and burnishing techniques. After the workshop, the tiles will be fired and available for visitors to pick up at the Art Museum.
