Paintings conservator Dr. Abbie Vandivere ’01 discusses her work on Vermeer’s iconic painting.
In a lecture titled “Who’s that Girl? Scientific Examination of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring,” Dr. Abbie Vandivere ’01, paintings conservator at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, will reveal some of the iconic painting’s secrets. Why doesn’t the girl have eyelashes? Was the background always so dark?
As head researcher for the “Girl in the Spotlight” project, Dr. Vandivere and her team used state-of-the-art technologies to examine Vermeer’s painting process and created a thirteen-foot, 3D reconstruction of the painting that recaptures the girl’s original appearance.
Introduced by Museum Director James Steward.
