It was more like an agricultural village in which some resident farmers would offer limited accommodations to travelers. Here we see that Kashū has focused his composition on the road itself, and the drama created by the towering pines on either side. There is farmland planted with rows of crops in the foreground to the right, but Shōno itself is hidden in the background. We see only rooftops beneath the mountains looming in the distance. </p>
