The Temptation of Christ,
1568
Hans Bol, Flemish, 1534 - 1593
x1960-73
This drawing illustrates a critical juncture in the narrative of the Temptation of Christ: the Devil has challenged Christ, who is fasting in the desert, to turn stone into bread, thereby proving that he is the Son of God. Bol depicts the Devil as a monster with the feet of a chicken and situates the scene within a fantasy landscape of vertiginous cliffs and twisting valleys. Bol’s tight penmanship, with fine parallel hatch lines, suggests that he was creating a composition that an engraver could easily translate into the print medium.
