Within and without,

1959

Wolfgang Hutter, Austrian, 1928–2014
x1961-44
Hutter’s brightly colored paintings are populated with hallucinatory imagery influenced by the altered states of consciousness associated with psychedelia. Within and Without seems to depict a tabletop, a wall adorned with ribbons and paper flowers, and two paintings, one displayed on the wall and the other propped up on the table. Yet the artist introduced multiple levels of illusionistic space to the composition: the painting at left appears transformed into a window through which a partly human figure reaches its hand, while that on the table depicts a horned man and woman who also seem to protrude into the surrounding space.
