Ombres Ameres,
1951
Yves Tanguy, 1900–1955; born Paris, France; died Woodbury, CT; active Paris and New York, NY
x1963-11
The Nazi advance through Europe led many European avant-garde artists, including Yves Tanguy and Max Ernst, to flee to the United States. Their subsequent work often conveys a sense of dislocation or alienation; Ombres amères, for example, translates to “bitter shadows.” While this composition appears to be a landscape, the juxtaposition of vaguely sinister abstract shapes against a background that lacks a horizon fosters spatial and psychological confusion
