Lee Bontecou, 1931–2022; born Providence, RI; died Florida; active Orbisonia, PA and New York, NY
x1964-39
Dark voids and hypnotic, illusionistic recesses are the hallmarks of Bontecou’s oeuvre. In this untitled drawing on a circular canvas, an oculus with a shadowy center is bisected by a series of three smaller voids. Like much of Bontecou’s early work, it was produced with graphite as well as with an acetylene torch that “drew” with soot, which she then manipulated through erasure and scraping, resulting in a work that is at once industrial and handmade. The artist Donald Judd championed Bontecou’s imagery, celebrating its abstract elusiveness. He insisted that her artwork was “an assertion of herself, what she feels and knows.” At once corporeal and mechanical, these forms suggest spinning propellers, speeding planes, and the cosmos.
