Shaugh Bridge on the Plym,

1815

John William Upham, 1772–1828; born Offwell, England; died Weymouth, England
x1966-51
Upham’s picturesque drawing of an old stone bridge in the hills of Devon County illustrates how by the early nineteenth century British landscape painters were using the medium to produce finished exhibition watercolors that could hang alongside oil paintings in the Royal Academy’s annual exhibitions. Rustic depictions of historic architectural motifs romantically set amid naturalistic surroundings suggested the effects of time on civilization in a manner that appealed to British sensibilities.
