Most likely, this screen would originally have been paired with a screen showing Sumiyoshi Shrine, another Shinto complex.
In the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan, the Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto complex built on the sacred island of Itsukushima. The famous "floating" tori gate to the shrine stands in the lake in the third panel from the right.
