Édouard Manet, 1832–1883; born and died Paris, France
x1967-25
Manet worked for several months on this etching after his oil painting The Spanish Singer (1860), which had received an honorable mention when first exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1861 and now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The etching is a good example of the artist’s initial use of printmaking as a means to autographically reproduce his favorite painted works. Manet’s painting and his etching after it reflect a strong interest in Spanish art and culture that had begun to emerge in France in the 1840s.
