Descent from the Cross by Torchlight,

1654

Rembrandt van Rijn, 1606–1669; born Leiden, Netherlands; died Amsterdam, Netherlands
x1969-313
Darkness—rendered with a dense network of etched lines—descends like a thick curtain in Rembrandt’s nocturnal staging of the moment—mentioned only briefly in biblical accounts—when Jesus’s body was taken down from the cross by his followers Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Only one light source—a torch held above Christ’s right foot, still attached to the cross—fitfully illuminates the complex chain of action, which includes a spectral hand reaching up out of the shadows to offer assistance.
