Phototherapy: Work on Emotional Eating,

1984

Jo Spence, 1934–1992; born London, UK; active London
2016-20
Spence was a prolific photographer, known for her engagement with socialist and feminist ideas in her work. In 1984 she developed what she called “Phototherapy” in which the fixity of the traditional self-portrait is set aside in favor of “permission to display ‘new’ visual selves to the camera.” Here, the artist’s face is obscured by a veil of pouring sugar, her visage transformed into an open, desirous mouth and extended tongue.
