Mary Cassatt, 1844–1926; born Allegheny City, PA; died Le Mesnil-Theribus, France
x1971-8
This print is one of a series of twelve drypoints published by Cassatt’s dealer Durand-Ruel in 1890. The great Japanese exhibition organized by Sigfried Bing at the École des Beaux-Arts that year had included more than seven hundred ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The prints by Utamaro—in particular the suite of twelve images of women known as The Twelve Hours in the Pleasure Quarter of the Yoshiwara—made a profound impression on Cassatt when she visited the exhibition, inspiring her to create her own set of drypoints of fashionable young women seen at intimate moments in their daily lives.
