Abala, from the portfolio Beloved Daughters,

2008

Fazal Sheikh, born 1965, New York, NY; active New York, NY and Zurich, Switzerland
2008-1058.30
Sheikh’s portfolio Beloved Daughters comprises thirty images made to raise awareness of the perils of abuse and poverty that many women on the Indian subcontinent suffer. Sheikh documents cruel gender inequalities as a cycle of life: starting with the abandonment of a newborn followed by the lack of access to education, abuse suffered at the hands of family and spouse, and, finally, the painful loneliness of widowhood.
