Chicago Tenement Family and the Visitor from Upstairs,
1910
Lewis Wickes Hine, 1874–1940; born Oshkosh, WI; died Hastings-on-Hudson, NY; active New York City, NY
x1973-20
Hine is best known for using photography to generate interest in social reform—he photographed child laborers and immigrants at Ellis Island and documented living conditions in cities like Pittsburgh and Chicago (pictured here). Although Hine sought to demonstrate the efficacy of photographs as truthful witnesses, his photographs were not simply documentary. He carefully considered the poses, expressions, and gestures of his subjects in the hope that his images would inspire viewers to take social and political action.
