Untitled (Charlesworth),

2013

Liz Deschenes, American, born 1966
2016-83
As chemical photography is increasingly replaced by digital, Deschenes continues to explore the processes of the former. Her abstract photographs, like this one, utilize large sheets of photosensitized paper that she exposes—without the aid of a camera—to moonlight, starlight, or other natural light sources. Because of these irregular light exposures and the artist’s chemical experiments in the darkroom, every print is unique. Each resulting work captures the essence of ambient light and ultimately presents a reflection of the environment in which the image was created, all the while challenging notions of what a photograph should look like.
