Couple in Carnival Dress Relieving Themselves,
after 1840
Paul Gavarni, French, 1804–1866
x1975-238
Like his contemporary Honoré Daumier, the satirical artist Paul Gavarni found tremendous success with lithographs published in popular newspapers such as La Caricature and Le Charivari. While Daumier focused on caricatures of the public and politics in contemporary life, Gavarni chose to depict intimate moments in the fashionable world of Parisian dance halls, carnivals, and cafés.
