Woman in a military uniform,

1945

Photographer unidentified
2016-399

This is a photograph of a woman wearing her husband’s Army uniform in autumn 1945, shortly after he returned home. Both the jacket and trousers are too big for her slight frame. The service cap is a bit oversized but is worn in a jaunty and cheerful manner.

She looks comfortable, confident, and proud to be photographed in her husband’s uniform. It represents “victory” in several respects. Her husband has returned safely from war, she is flaunting her hold on her husband, and while the United States has won the war, she is the star of the show this afternoon.
