Bowl with bird and three lizards,

900–1000

Mimbres
Boldface Black-on-White (Style II)
2017-115
Mimbres ceramic painting in the Boldface style uses broad strokes to define basic forms, some of which are filled with thin parallel lines, or hachures. The resulting composition appears to have three tones: white, red, and a color in between. The multidirectional application of the
central hachure evokes the overlapping structure of plaited basketry. Two small holes near the rim indicate that the vessel cracked and was repaired in antiquity, confirming that its owner cherished this vessel.
