Experiment in Three Color Carbon,

ca 1910–11

Paul Lewis Anderson, American, 1880–1956
x1976-260
After nearly a decade working as an electrical engineer, Anderson took up photography and opened his own portrait studio in 1910. Although his photographs have received more attention in recent years, Anderson is best known for his writings on photography—particularly his detailed guides to printing techniques, including platinum and silver printing. This photograph shows Anderson’s interest in tonal gradations and his emphasis on light and color, which he controlled through various print processes.
