Self-Portrait,

Jonathan Richardson, 1665–1745; born and died London, United Kingdom
2017-155
This self-portrait shows the artist dressed informally—wearing a soft cap appropriate for a domestic setting rather than an official wig—but in a formal pose. The author of an important treatise, An Essay on the Theory of Painting (1715), Richardson portrayed himself against a sober background with no sign of his profession as an artist and theorist.
