Inverse Decay,

2002

Jason Middlebrook, born 1966, Jackson, MI; active Hudson, NY
Printed and published by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE)

Fascinated by representations of decay and decomposition, Middlebrook employs a profusion of shapes and splatters of color to represent the creation of subatomic particles following a nuclear fission event. Here the visual language of abstraction signals the mathematical process of inverse beta decay, used by theoretical physicists to quantify the effects of atomic reactions occurring in such massive quantities and on such a minute scale that they can never be visualized.
