Untitled,

Lee Bontecou, 1931–2022; born Providence, RI; died Florida; active Orbisonia, PA and New York, NY
Printed and published by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE)
x1975-388
The deep, impenetrable black field of this print was created by a process of layering ink through a series of three screens; onto two of these the tonal variations of Bontecou’s drawings were transferred through a photo-sensitive process while on the third a hand-cut stencil ensured a dense plane of ink and clean, graphic shapes. The play between these forms— alternately drawn and stenciled—gives the composition its visual dynamism, posing the questions of what is present and what is absent, of which forms emerge and which recede, materially, visually, and expressively.
