Olla with geometric design,
1100–1275
Ancient Puebloan
Cibola White Ware
2017-285
Among the multiple substyles of Cibola White Wares, the Snowflake type is distinguished by angular, stepped geometric designs in black on white ground, applied to almost-spherical jars with short, straight necks. This particular example includes both straight and jagged lines on the diagonal, producing a dazzling optical effect. A single reserved “eye,” seen at the olla’s shoulder (where the surface curves inward toward the neck), diverges from the overall design and draws our attention. Is it meant to animate or enliven the vessel?
